Nadal beats Almagro to win 8th Barcelona Open

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? Rafael Nadal won the Barcelona Open for the eighth time Sunday, defeating Nicolas Almagro 6-4, 6-3 for his fourth title of the year.

After trailing 3-0 in the first set, Nadal found his form and broke his fellow Spaniard in three of his next four service games to take command.

Nadal has made six straight finals after returning from a knee injury that sidelined him since last summer. This title, the 54th of his career, comes one week after his eight-year reign at Monte Carlo ended with a loss to top-ranked Novak Djokovic.

Nadal has won all 10 of his matches against the 12th-ranked Almagro. He has won 39 straight matches on the red clay at Real Club de Tenis, his last loss coming 10 years ago.

Kashmir civil society seeks re-investigation into Kunanposhpora ...

By News Desk | Srinagar, Kashmir

Demanding re-investigation into the ?mass rape? of at least thirty two women in Kunanposhpora village of North Kashmir?s Kupwara district, in 1991, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Jammu and Kashmir High Court. The petitioners also sought directions for implementation of the 2011 recommendations of the Human Rights Commission of Kashmir for re-investigating the case.

Women in Kunanposhpora alleged that on the intervening night of February 23 and 24 in 1991 the Indian troops of Rajputana Rifles raped them while men where beaten up. After the incident under forceful public anger, police had lodged an FIR at Trehgam police station against the troops on 18 March 1991.

The PIL has been filed by students, teachers and other professionals through their counsel, Parvaiz Imroz- a prominent human rights lawyer, and had sought directives for initiating criminal proceedings against the then Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir, Wajahat Habibullah, President of Indian Federation of Working Journalists, K Vikram Rao, and a visiting Professor, Boobli George Varghese, for their individual roles in covering up the matter of the ?mass rape?.

On 19 October 2011, a division bench of the commission had asked the authorities to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) for re-opening the case and had also recommended to prosecute the then Director Prosecution who had sought closure of the case on the grounds that the perpetrators were untraced.

MUNICH, April 23 (Reuters) - Barcelona centre half Gerard Pique acknowledged his team were thoroughly second best as Bayern Munich romped to a 4-0 win in their Champions League semi-final first leg at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday. "They gave us a thrashing," he said. "We will try to turn it around in the return leg (on May 1) and put in a good performance for the fans. "They were better and faster than us. There is no point talking about the referee, there is no excuse." Arjen Robben, who sparkled on the wing for Bayern and scored one of the goals, hailed his team's spectacular performance. ...

Lauren Bush Lauren, Sr. Simone Campbell, SSS, and Rep. Tammy Duckworth Honored for Mulitfaith Lives of Commitment

Auburn Seminary recognizes leaders healing the world; honorees to lead panel discussion on need for moral economy.

New York, NY (PRWEB) April 25, 2013

WHAT: Auburn Theological Seminary is honoring Lauren Bush Lauren, CEO and Co-Founder, FEED Projects; Sister Simone Campbell, SSS, Executive Director of NETWORK, a National Catholic Social Justice Lobby in Washington, D.C. and leader of NETWORK?S ?Nuns on the bus? tours, and Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth, U.S. Representative for Illinois? 8th Congressional District for their ongoing pursuits of social justice that cross boundaries and unite faiths.

Auburn will also honor three young members of its Face to Face | Faith to Faith program, which has brought together hundreds of Christian, Jewish and Muslim teenagers from Northern Ireland, the Middle East, South Africa and the U.S. to develop a new generation of leaders able to negotiate a multifaith global society.

Following the awards ceremony, honorees will lead a provocative panel discussion, ?Building a Moral Economy with Resources for All.? During the conversation, the honorees will discuss the need to protect human dignity and to bring strength to the vulnerable among us. Given the ongoing national debates about immigration, the federal budget and deficit and even food assistance for the poor, this promises to be a timely conversation. The Rev. Dr. Welton Gaddy, host of the weekly nationally broadcast radio show State of Belief, will moderate.????

WHEN and WHERE: 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., May 1 at Cipriani 42nd Street, 110 E. 42nd Street, New York.

WHY IT?S IMPORTANT: This year, women and young leaders shaped the public discourse on pivotal social issues like equality and gender issues, a moral economy and ending hunger and poverty, and propelled justice-minded candidates to victory. The important multifaith work of women and young people is critical to advancing social justice, but these leaders are seldom recognized for their work, particularly women. The Lives of Commitment ceremony is on opportunity to underscore the incredible work happening across faiths and the world.

Auburn seminary has played a vital role in bringing people of all faiths together to achieve social justice. I admire and support how Auburn equips leaders with the tools and resources they need to bridge religious divides and strengthen our communities.? ? Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth

?My experience is that the Holy Spirit is alive and well and making mischief! It is this surprising Spirit that stirred up the opportunity for Nuns on the Bus! I am honored, humbled and grateful that the living God is so alive in these challenging times and that we can respond with our part to God?s call to do justice.? ? Sister Simone Campbell, SSS

"Auburn does amazing work to unite people from all faiths to take action in social justice campaigns. Auburn?s work represents the best of what religion teaches us to do. For my part, I was motivated to start FEED after seeing the realities of hunger and poverty that so many live in around the world. It is unacceptable to me that some do not have even the most basic human necessities ? food and clean water ? and I have seen many religious groups around the world unite around helping with this very important issue." ? Tsarnaev's name was in terrorism database

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The federal government added the name of the dead Boston Marathon bombing suspect to a terrorist database 18 months before the deadly explosions, U.S. officials told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

The CIA made the request to add Tamerlan Tsarnaev's name to the terrorist database after the Russian government contacted the agency with concerns that he had become a follower of radical Islam. About six months earlier, the FBI had separately investigated Tsarnaev, also at Russia's request, but the FBI found no ties to terrorism, officials said.

The new disclosure that Tsarnaev was included within a huge, classified database of known and suspected terrorists before the attacks was expected to drive congressional inquiries in coming weeks about whether the Obama administration adequately investigated tips from Russia that Tsarnaev had posed a security threat. Shortly after the bombings, U.S. officials said the intelligence community had no information about threats to the marathon before the April 15 explosions.

Tsarnaev died Friday in a police shootout hours before his younger brother, Dzhokhar, was discovered hiding in a boat in a suburban back yard.

The terrorist database is called TIDE, the Terrorist Identities Datamart Environment. Analysts at the U.S. National Counterterrorism Center submit names and even partial names into TIDE. About a year ago, there were some 745,000 people listed in the database. Intelligence analysts scour TIDE, trying to establish connections and update files as new intelligence is uncovered.

For entries with a full name, date of birth and intelligence indicating a reasonable suspicion that a person is a terrorist or has terror ties, the person's name is sent to a terror watch list, which feeds into lists like the one that bans known or suspected terrorists from traveling on planes.

Officials say they never found the type of derogatory information on Tsarnaev that would have elevated his profile among counterterrorism investigators and placed him on the terror watch list.

Five days after the U.S. determined who was allegedly behind the deadly Boston marathon terror attacks, Washington is piecing together what happened and whether there were any unconnected dots buried in U.S. government files that, if connected, could have prevented the bombings.

Lawmakers who were briefed by the FBI said they have more questions than answers about the investigation of Tsarnaev. U.S. officials were expected to brief the Senate on the investigation Thursday.

"The review is just beginning, but I haven't seen any red flags thus far," said Rep. Adam Schiff, a California Democrat who sits on the House Intelligence Committee and was briefed on the investigation Wednesday. House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., however, said lawmakers intend to pursue whether there was a breakdown in information-sharing.

U.S. officials described to the AP what the government knew about Tsarnaev since he was first placed on the intelligence community's radar 18 months ago. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the ongoing investigation.

Russia's internal security service, the FSB, sent information to the FBI about Tamerlan Tsarnaev on March 4, 2011. The Russians told the FBI that Tsarnaev, an ethnically Chechen Russian immigrant living in the Boston area, was a follower of radical Islam and had changed drastically since 2010. Because of the subsequent FBI inquiry, Tsarnaev's name was added to a Homeland Security Department database used by U.S. officials at the border to help screen people coming in and out of the U.S. That database is called the Treasury Enforcement Communications System, or TECS.

The FBI's Boston office opened a preliminary review of Tsarnaev and searched government databases for potentially terror-related communications. Investigators looked into whether Tsarnaev used online sites that promoted radical activity. They interviewed Tsarnaev and his family members but found nothing connecting him to terror activity. The FBI shared that information with Russia and also asked for more information on Tsarnaev, but never heard back. The FBI's review into Tsarnaev was closed in June 2011.

Then, in late September 2011, Russia separately contacted the CIA with nearly identical concerns about Tsarnaev. The Russians provided two possible birthdates for him and a variation of how his name might be spelled, as well as the spelling in the Russian-style Cyrillic alphabet.

The CIA determined that Tsarnaev should be included in TIDE, and the National Counterterrorism Center added it into the database. The spelling of Tsarnaev's name in TIDE was not the same as the spelling the FBI used in its investigation. The CIA also shared this information with other federal agencies in October.

In January 2012, Tsarnaev traveled to Russia and returned to the U.S. in July. Three days before he left for Russia, the TECS database generated an alert on Tsarnaev. That alert was shared with a Customs and Border Protection officer who is a member of the FBI's Boston joint terrorism task force. By that time, the FBI's investigation into Tsarnaev had been closed for nearly six months because the FBI uncovered no evidence that he was tied to terror groups.

On Jan. 21, 2012, the airline on which Tsarnaev was traveling misspelled his name when it submitted its list of passengers to the U.S. government for security screening. Airlines are required to provide the list of passengers on international flights so the U.S. can check their names through government databases, including the terrorist watch list. Because his name was misspelled, there was not another alert like there was three days earlier.

In July 2012, Tsarnaev returned to the U.S., and another alert was generated in TECS. This information was again shared with the Customs and Border Protection officer on the FBI's Boston joint terrorism task force. But because the FBI had closed its investigation into Tsarnaev a year earlier, there was no reason to be suspicious of his travels to Russia.

"Later on, these agencies will be judged," said Dutch Ruppersberger of Maryland, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee. "But right now, it's way too soon to criticize or to start making political arguments or who failed or whatever."

eBay app updated with new UI, improved search and shopping cart

eBay app

Version 2.2 adds new features for US and UK users

Today the eBay app for Android is getting an update to version 2.2, bringing both visual and functional changes. The Home, Cart, and Checkout areas of the app have received a new look. Users in the US and UK get a Shopping Cart that will synchronize across all devices that use eBay -- the items to your cart on one device will be reflected when the cart is viewed anywhere else. Checking out with cart items becomes easier, with the option to pay for multiple items at the same time using a single checkout. eBay's item search was updated to feature inline search suggestions, autocorrect, and expanded international results when few to no results are returned.

The app is live in the Play Store for those wanting to update; new users can follow the Play Store link above. We hope this update was more thoroughly tested than the previous one, and won't be recalled in the next few days.

Condom giant Durex has developed underwear (and a bra) that will vibrate when your partner rubs their finger around on an iPhone app. They're called Fundawear, and were designed to allow lovers to 'touch each other over the internet'. For the record, I don't want anybody touching me over the internet. Allegedly Durex plans on actually manufacturing the undewear (which seem like more of a draw for women than men), which we'll see about. I wonder how expensive they would be. Also, how easy they are to clean. Hey -- accidents happen, even in your fanciest underwear. And that's when you bury them at the bottom of the trashbag and take it out immediately. We've all been there.

Hit the jump for a video demo of these two jokers being awkward.

Thanks to lilco, who agrees the best underwear are a lover's dangling from a bedside table lamp shade. And to Matty Matt, who prefers trying to get them stuck on the ceiling fan.

Social stress and the inflamed brain

Apr. 21, 2013 ? Depression is the leading cause of disability with more than 350 million people globally affected by this disease. In addition to debilitating consequences on mental health, depression predisposes an individual to physiological disease such as heart disease, and conversely heart disease increases the risk of depression. According to the World Health Organization by the year 2020 heart disease and depression will be the number one and number two leading causes of disability in developed countries. While the co-occurrence of these disorders is well recognized, an understanding of the underlying mechanisms that lead to this relationship are lacking.

Dr. Susan K. Wood, a Research Associate at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, investigates brain-related biomarkers for depression-heart disease comorbidity. She uses a rodent model of social stress likened to bullying in people that she has found to produce depressive-like behaviors and dysfunctional cardiovascular changes in a susceptible subset of rodents. Her previous work highlighted a role for the stress-related neurohormone corticotropin-releasing factor in rendering an individual vulnerable to stress-induced depression and heart disease. Intrigued by what other biomarkers may be distinct her latest study is the first to identify gene and protein expression differences in the brains of rodents that are either vulnerable or resilient to developing stress-induced depressive-like behaviors and cardiovascular dysfunction.

The study, conducted in male rats, compared expression of 88 genes involved in signaling within the brain between socially stressed and non-stressed rats. It revealed more than 35 genes in stressed rats that had altered expression compared with non-stressed controls. Many of the genes that were differentially expressed were related to inflammation. Follow-up studies measuring protein levels revealed that Interleukin-1? and Monocyte chemotactic protein-1, inflammatory markers known to play a role in depression and heart disease, were suppressed in the brains of the resilient subset of rats and Interleukin-1? was increased in the vulnerable group. Dr. Wood measured the gene and protein levels under resting conditions 24 hours after just 5 daily 30-minute exposures to social stress.

The identification of factors in the brain that distinguish susceptibility and resiliency to depression and heart disease comorbidity would be a major advance in predicting, preventing and treating these disorders. Dr. Wood is continuing these studies as an Assistant Professor at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine with the hope that these findings will uncover new targets to treat the mind and body.

Her findings will be presented April 21st, 2013 during Experimental Biology 2013 in Boston, MA.

FAA furloughs start, so do airport delays

Commercial airline flights started backing up and delayed some travelers Monday, a day after air traffic controllers started going on furlough because of government spending cuts.

Information from the FAA and others showed that flying Sunday was largely uneventful, with most flights on time. There were delays in parts of Florida, but those were caused by thunderstorms.

Mark Duell at the flight tracking website FlightAware said that John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia airports in New York indicated delays due to lower staffing starting late Sunday evening. The FAA website said that flights from Philadelphia and Orlando, Fla., into John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia and Westchester County airports were delayed due to staffing issues.

The trade group Airlines for America, which represents the airlines and had predicted a big traffic snarl, said Sunday evening that it was "not seeing a significant impact at this point." A spokeswoman said the group would continue to monitor the situation, and urged flyers to stay in contact with their airlines.

Delays were also affecting travelers in Los Angeles. The FAA said late Sunday night that staffing cuts were causing delays averaging more than three hours for flights arriving at Los Angeles International Airport. The agency did not say how many flights were affected.

Airport spokesman Marshall Lowe said about 70 flights had delays of about an hour or more Sunday, but he could not say what role the staffing cuts played in the delays.

The FAA said that "relatively good weather" and light traffic, which is typical of Sundays, helped keep delays in check. The agency said it would be working with airlines "to minimize the delay impacts of lower staffing" as the busy summer travel season approaches.

Government budget cuts that kicked in last month are forcing the FAA and other agencies to cut their spending. FAA officials have said they have no choice but to furlough all 47,000 agency employees, including nearly 15,000 controllers. Each employee will lose one day of work every other week. The FAA has said that planes will have to take off and land less frequently, so as not to overload the remaining controllers on duty.

Airline trade groups and the country's biggest pilots union sued the FAA on Friday to try to stop the furloughs. They predicted that the furloughs would delay or cancel flights for as many as one out of every three airline passengers across the country. Airlines have also directed their customers to tell the FAA to find other ways to cut costs.

SimCity update 2.0 hits April 22, offers bug fixes, enhancements -- still no offline mode

Although SimCity has become relatively stable following its problematic launch, there are naturally still ongoing bugs that the folks at EA Maxis have been working to fix. Thankfully, that version 2.0 update that was teased just over a week ago now has an arrival date of April 22 at 4PM ET. Included in the update are 26 bug fixes, along with data map color filters, a color-correct HUD for the colorblind setting and the action of mayors traveling from their mansions to their jobs. Sadly, an offline mode is still no more than wishful thinking, but at least that OS X version should still be on track for a June 11th release. You'll find all the details about your virtual city's soon-to-arrive enhancements at the source link -- expect some server downtime, by the way, when the update itself hits.

Affidavit: Maine hermit carried bacon, syrup, $395

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) ? A state police affidavit says a Maine man who lived in the woods as a hermit for nearly three decades was carrying bacon, marshmallows and $395 in cash when he was arrested on burglary charges.

An affidavit obtained by the Kennebec Journal (http://bit.ly/13oW4cH ) lists the items 47-year-old Christopher Knight possessed when he was arrested this month on charges he stole food from a camp for children with special needs.

The items also include keys, pliers, electrical tape, a watch, a baseball hat, coffee, hamburger patties, chicken nuggets, cheese, corn syrup and potato chips.

Since his arrest, Knight has attracted a telephoned marriage proposal and a stranger's offer to bail him out. Knight rejected the bail offer and remains jailed.

Police say he may have been responsible for 1,000 burglaries overall.

92% The Gatekeepers

All Critics (87) | Top Critics (30) | Fresh (80) | Rotten (7)

The film and its talking head participants paint the picture in both broad strokes and fine detail.

Whatever one's political stripe regarding Israel, it's hard to dispute the impressions and perspective of the film's six eyewitnesses.

The level of candor here may not satisfy hard-liners of either stripe, but it can help viewers begin to formulate new questions about the philosophical, strategic and moral challenges of conflict, in particular "wars on terror."

Ultimately the movie feels evasive, and its flashy, digitally animated re-creations of military surveillance footage unpleasantly evoke the Call of Duty video games.

It offers startlingly honest insight into the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from some of those who called the shots.

As a political testament, the result is revealing and important.

A riveting but depressing history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

It's a depressing movie, yet there is encouragement to be found in the manifest decency and reasonableness of these six honest, articulate men ...

The former heads of Israel's military anti-terrorism agency Shin Bet break their silence in this unnerving, eye-opening documentary.

The film, though based on the exploits of Shin Bet, gives us reason to think about the drones that take out more than just terrorists.

Makes for truly bracing viewing.

A fascinating film offering a startling look inside one of the most tightlipped intelligence agencies on the planet, and providing powerful resonances with the US and UK's "war on terror".

A compelling overview of a modern security agency - bred in a moral grey area, organising state-sanctioned violence, but uncertain of the strength of its political safety net.

While memorable in sometimes unexpected ways (1980 head Avraham Shalom's long unwashed nails), there is always the nagging feeling that any revelations are being pushed or sold a little too hard.

Dror Moreh's Oscar-nominated documentary is riveting, haunting and depressing in equal measure, offering a sobering assessment of the Israel-Palestine conflict from a unique perspective.

[T]he Oscar-nominated documentary in which the six living former heads of Shin Bet, the ultrasecretive Israeli domestic security agency, talk about their antiterrorism work...

Although The Gatekeepers may not be quite theatrical nor dramatic enough for it to be highly recommended as a cinematic experience, this does feel like a film that really should be seen.

Many secrets are revealed and examined in director Dror Moreh's mind-blowingly fine film. If I have a quibble, it's that he never reveals the most tantalizing secret of all: how the hell he pulled it off.

[An] absorbing documentary, which charts the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from the Six Day War to the presentday.

Insightful, revelatory and profound, Moreh's Oscar-nominated documentary combines riveting interviews, archive footage and - yes - state-of-the-art photographic effects to offer a unique perspective on the Israel-Palestine issue.

Both journalistic coup and unsettling confirmation of the idea that 'you can't make peace using military means.'

Much like Errol Morris' "The Fog of War," Dror Moreh's film is a sobering inside look inside history, at mistakes made and opportunities missed.

Moreh employs a direct interviewing style, reminiscent of Errol Morris' work, to get the men to talk about their days leading Shin Bet.

Moreh gets some startling confessions and insights from each man but also misses the opportunity to truly challenge his subjects on their regard for democracy, basic human rights and their own accountability.

Director Dror Moreh doesn't rest on his scoop

A powerful look inside the Israeli defense establishment

Is "Mumbo Sauce" Guilty of More Than Swagger-Jacking? - Arts Desk

"Pump Me Up" may have recently closed at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, but the show and some of the issues it raised still reverberate. A satellite exhibit on view at a pop-up gallery on H Street NE has fanned the flame wars that "Pump Me Up" sparked.

"Mumbo Sauce," which is showing at 906 H Street NE, closes on Sunday after an abbreviated run. It was curated by "Pump Me Up" impresario Roger Gastman and Contemporary Wing gallery founder Lauren Gentile. The show only opened a week and a half ago, but "Mumbo Sauce" has already?kicked up an uproar on Facebook, where D.C. rapper and City Paper contributor Head Roc asks whether go-go artists are being properly credited and compensated for the Globe Posters on view?and for sale?in "Mumbo Sauce."

On Facebook, Head Roc points to Sidney Thomas' recent?"Mumbo Sauce" post for Examiner.com, which criticizes both "Pump Me Up" and "Mumbo Sauce" for allegedly exploiting go-go artists.?"I asked the Corcoran officials if any funds generated by the [Pump Me Up] exhibit would go back to the go-go musicians who actually made the music and contributed to the advancement of the culture," Thomas writes. "The Corcoran people seemed irritated by my inquiry, but eventually they did respond and claimed, 'The Pump Me Up exhibit itself makes no profit.' They also said the go-go bands had donated the pieces on display and they weren't for sale."

The Globe posters on view at the Corcoran weren't for sale, but viewers can buy the real deal at "Mumbo Sauce": authentic go-go promotional posters, priced between $75 and $150, or $500 for rarities. But?Rosina Teri Memolo, one "Pump Me Up" artist whose photography is on view in "Mumbo Sauce," pushed back against the notion that anyone was making money hand over fist as a result. "I understand being fixated with the money, it sure does look slick," Memolo offers, in a contentious exchange with Thomas and Head Roc on Head Roc's Facebook wall.

Maybe it's the move from the street to the gallery that has some go-go fans bristling; looming large over both exhibits are questions about authenticity, class, and race. But whether a white Bethesda native like Gastman is sufficiently "credentialed" to curate a show related to go-go is almost beside the point, because any move from the street into the gallery potentially degrades the work's character regardless of who put it there. It's also worth considering that while go-go is unique to D.C., these questions are hardly specific to go-go. The same questions plagued "Art in the Streets," the street-art show that Gastman curated for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles in 2011. The same questions plague any street-art show anywhere.

What's happening specifically at "Mumbo Sauce" is even less unusual. Co-curators Gentile and Gastman bought the posters last summer from Globe, and now they're re-selling them. "A group of Globe posters like this have never been available before and we made a point of keeping the prices accessible," Gentile writes in an email. "Roger and I profit from the sales and so did Globe. It is just like any used poster, record, book, secondary market art sale, eBay, etc."

Go-go promoters could argue that they deserve a cut from sales. For the most part, it was the people who promoted go-gos, not the artists who performed in them, who commissioned Globe to print the promotional posters. But that's not how secondary-market sales work, or no one would ever be able to make money commemorating an event. (Imagine President Barack Obama asking for a cut from every piece of inauguration swag.) While these Globe posters inherit their nostalgic value from legendary D.C. acts like?Rare Essence, Trouble Funk, Chuck Brown and many others, the posters are themselves works made by Harry Knorr, the graphic artist responsible for the wood-type behind the Globe hype.

If "Pump Me Up" was susceptible to claims of swagger-jacking?and sure, it is?it would make sense that "Mumbo Sauce" would garner the same criticism and worse. After all, the H Street NE pop-up show is explicitly cashing in on go-go posters in a way that the Corcoran show didn't. But "Mumbo Sauce" comes by it honestly.

Ethics aside, the show is a strong exhibit of visual artists whose works were largely glossed over in "Pump Me Up"?one of my criticisms of that show. A wall of?Cynthia Connolly's?letterpressed photos of roadside signs is one of the best presentations of her work that anyone's ever put on. There's?new work by?Borf and?old stuff by?Clark Fox, two names familiar to two very different generations of people who love D.C. graffiti-inspired pop art. With "Mumbo Sauce,"?Tim Conlon gets an opportunity to redeem himself for the shameless tape drawing of a body outline that greeted viewers at the entrance of "Pump Me Up."

Some items on sale in the pop-up show seem like they might be there to troll D.C. natives. The limited-edition jars of mumbo sauce?yes, that's right?read like a salvo in a culture war. Yet these were packaged by Memolo, who grew up in D.C. She bought three gallons of "homemade hot orange mumbo" at Gourmet Express at 13th and Pennsylvania avenues SE near her home. The labels feature her photos from the carry-outs and counters where mumbo sauce can still be found. "I often shoot corner stores and?carry-outs because I feel like they are disappearing," Memolo says. Can a D.C. artist making D.C. work be guilty of swagger-jacking?

As for the Globe posters, there's another way to think about what they offer in "Mumbo Sauce"?besides a sincere bargain. This show helps to put Knorr in the context in which he belongs: as an important graphic artist with a significant footprint in D.C. That's the opposite of swagger-jacking.

McCartney lends voice to anti-gun violence effort

NEW YORK (AP) ? Paul McCartney is adding his voice to Tony Bennett's campaign against gun violence.

The former Beatle recorded a voice message that's part of a text-to-call operation Wednesday for Bennett's Voices Against Violence campaign. McCartney and others are encouraging Americans to send a text, which will lead to the singer's message and connect the caller to their local Senate office after providing their zip code.

The Senate will vote Wednesday on a proposal to expand background checks, the linchpin of the effort to curb gun violence. In December, 20 children and six aides were shot and killed at a Newtown, Conn., elementary school, propelling gun violence into a national issue. Families of the Newtown victims have been lobbying lawmakers.

Other celebrities supporting include Alec Baldwin, Gloria Estefan, Josh Groban and Juanes.

How to Pick a Niche and Turn That Into an Info Product - Shoemoney

Everyone has a message, a life story, or a body of knowledge that is valuable and useful to others. Once you identify what yours is, that message and knowledge can be monetized as an info product.

People are often overwhelmed by the idea of creating an info product, but as former mortgage broker and digital information business expert, Susan Lassiter Lyons would tell you, it is far from an unattainable goal. She speaks from experience, having gone from mortgage broker to online mogul in relatively short order. Many people, just like her (and you), create information products such as e-books, CDs, DVDs, workbooks, seminars, and other programs to add value to their target audience every day.

Marci Shimoff is a former stress management consultant who wrote the book ?Happy For No Reason?. Now she offers audio courses, teleseminars, and a home study course on? how to be happy.

Gary Vaynerchuck worked at his parent?s liquor store in New Jersey and is a self-taught wine expert. He went on to start WineLibrary.tv, an online wine webseries, and WineLibrary.com to sell wine online. Now he is a sought-after expert in social media and teaches companies how to build their brands online.

Ben Ford is a retired engineer who now sells e-books on how to build solar panels and wind farms. His sales generate more than $30,000 a week!

Susan Lassiter-Lyons was a former mortgage broker who closed her business in November 2008 after the ?Mortgage Meltdown?. She launched her digital information business and real estate investing blog in January 2009 based around her expertise in real estate investing and hit six figures in July 2009. ?She didn?t stop there ? now she?s well into the seven figures.

Let their stories bear witness that you don?t have to be well-known in order to market a successful info product. Third party online marketplaces like ClickBank.com make it easy for you.

ClickBank offers more than 50,000 digital products covering topics as diverse as how to manage menopause, how to get rock-hard abs, and how to build a solar panel! All these products have TWO things in common:

  1. They are sold and delivered online
  2. They are created by regular people just like you and me

How to Identify Your Expertise

Begin by taking an inventory of your knowledge:

-????????? What do people always ask you about?

-????????? What have you studied extensively?

-????????? Most Importantly: What do you love to do?

Once you?ve identified your specific message or body of knowledge that you wish to focus on, start brainstorming particularly pressing questions about that topic you can address in your info product.

As a useful info product hack, go to answers.yahoo.com and type your topic in the search bar. Each of the top questions that come up can be a chapter in your e-book! Write it in a Word doc and save as a PDF and there you have it! The first draft of your e-book.

Once you start getting fancy, have a designer format it and add graphics. If you don?t have easy access to a designer, use a freelance network like Elance.com or oDesk.com to help you find one.

With that product you will want to implement Susan?s three-step framework to really grow it into a profitable online business.

Remember, when creating an info product, identifying your expertise is the first and most crucial step. Choosing a topic that you aren?t passionate about will inevitably result in failure. Pick something you love to do and that you won?t mind putting some elbow grease into. Once you find that perfect topic, it will just flow ? I promise!
